Cool tBLOG quotes: "Soldiers dying in Iraq are dying to defend the US against terrorism as a victory in Iraq is a victory in the war on terror. They are dying to defend freedom and democracy in the US and to spread freedom and democracy to Iraq. They are dying for the interests of the US, her allies, and by extension, all Americans (whether they understand it or not). They are not dying for Haliburton, oil, or any other ridiculous shit / slant the anti-war types or conspiracy theorists want to spin. Haliburton is a company (among many others, both US and foreign) that seized a chance to profit in REBUILDING Iraq. There is a big difference between that and war-profiteering. Haliburton did not start the war, terrorists and those that support them did. Putting the chicken before the egg just won’t fly." -polymath
"[B]efore you [Europeans] write us off as just a bunch of sweaty, hairy-chested, Bible-thumping morons who are more likely to break their fast by dipping a Krispy Kreme into a diet cola than a biscotti into an espresso - and who inexplicably have won more Nobel prizes than all other countries combined,
host 25 or 30 of the world's finest universities and five or six of the world's best symphonies, produce wines that win prizes at your own tasting competitions, have built the world's most vibrant economy, are the world's only military superpower and, so to speak in our spare time, have landed on
the moon and sent our robots to Mars - may I suggest you stop frothing at
the mouth long enough to consider just what are these ideas we hold that you find so silly and repugnant?"
"Democracy may have been invented in Greece, but cowardess was invented in France where it lives and thrives to this very day."
"I'm referring to the Iraqi terrorist bastard fighters. The ones liberals insist are either not in Iraq, or are there by the thousands, depending on which liberal you listen to."
"How is it that the Left can believe absolute crazy shit, like the Bush-Saudi Arabian money connection, or the even worse and totally false Bush-bin Laden connection (based on 100% lies) and look at you straight and say there was absolutely no way that Saddam Hussein and Al Qaeda had ties?"

The reasons surrounding the succession movements of both times are vastly different, as is the status of the U.S. as a stable nation. I always viewed the notion of succession like this: The U.S. was founded by a group of people who valued independence. People who wanted to form a more "perfect" government. One cannot assume that the spirit of independence that helped to found this nation is dead or pacified... and one cannot assume that the U.S. will always be the "perfect" government for all the people or states living within it. When in the course of human events.... and all that jazz. :) I am not saying that a succession would ever happen. I am just not seeing a reason to deny people who want it the oppertunity to legally and seriously pursue it. Of course, to be fair, you will have blind loyalists on both sides of the debate... I suppose somethings don't change.... posted by: LynnKramer (reply) post date: 01.12.05 (10:08 am) For years now, a committe has been planning the Splitting of California into 2 separate state. That idea has go far enough to name Santa Ann as the capital of Southern California, while keeping Scaremento as the capital of Northern California. the dividing line between the two would be a line drawn along a certain latitude, I think close to San Jose. This makes more sense and has a much mor likelihood of happening. the citizens of the new states would gain 1 more senator each and 1 more repesentative each. The northern and southern parts of the two are far apart idealogically and politically as well. posted by: RedTigress (reply) post date: 01.12.05 (3:04 pm) That's so dumb. I'm in CA and I've heard of this group before. It's a pipe dream, to say the least. . . and a silly one at that. posted by: Defensor (reply) post date: 01.15.05 (11:36 am) Reply to: lawngnome "and one cannot assume that the U.S. will always be the "perfect" government for all the people or states living within it." We have never had a government that was "perfect" for all the people living within it, but that doesn't mean those people should be allowed to move to some state and then secede. I wasn't saying it should be illegal to talk about secession, I was just wondering if actively pursuing it was legal. Apparently it is as long as violence isn't involved. posted by: Defensor (reply) post date: 01.15.05 (11:42 am) Reply to: LynnKramer That does make more sense. I've never heard of it. I'd only heard of this and MEChA trying to return the southwest to Mexico. posted by: Defensor (reply) post date: 01.15.05 (11:43 am) Reply to: RedTigress Especially since CA is like, what, the 5th largest economy in the world? For the government to just give it up without a fight would be insane. posted by: RedTigress (reply) post date: 01.16.05 (7:34 am) Reply to: Defensor Exactly. Can you imagine the civil war it would start? posted by: ABlain (reply) post date: 01.19.05 (2:57 am) I would hope that the United States has grown past its need for civil war. Perhaps you need only look north to a peacefull secession that happened in 1867. When people are truly dedicated there is a peaceful means to nearly every end. It is absurd to believe that a civil war will result because of the loss of 22% of tax revenues. I can't realistically see California seceding, but it would certainly be interesting. No more American movie influence, all our movies would come from the nation of California! posted by: Defensor (reply) post date: 01.19.05 (10:57 am) Reply to: ABlain I can't see it happening either, but it's still fun to look at an organization set on getting California to secede. |
